Verizon Wireless Sends Cell Phone User a Bill for $10,000

A man in California had not even noticed the monthly bill, which was normally paid through the Bank of America, until the Bank notified him that there was a bounced payment. Mark Elliot almost had a heart failure when he discovered that Verizon Wireless had billed him $9,993.88 for his April charges, which included having used up 44,000 megabytes of data.

Verizon insisted that he must pay the bill, and theorized that he could have used the cell phone as a wireless modem to download videos for a whole day or to play hours of an online game.

Elliot said he did nothing of the kind, and there was simply no way that he could have run up such charges.

In the end, happily, Verizon relented and promised to drop the charges.

But the mystery remains how the mistake happened, and is unlikely to be solved.
